Introduction
The Ruby Skirt is a PDF Pattern available for free to all our newsletter subscribers. Sign up today to receive your personal download link! The Ruby Skirt features buttons down the front, roomy patch pockets and a wide waistband which is elasticated at the back and flat at the front. The elastic makes Ruby easy to fit and comfortable to wear, whilst the flat front makes her very flattering.
This pattern is designed for light to medium weight woven fabrics. Try her in a viscose, rayon or crepe for plenty of movement, a cotton poplin, lawn or even a chambray for a more structured look. Use a beautiful print, or sew her up in a solid colour to wear with your patterned me-made tops.
Ruby pairs especially well with a jersey top like our Audrey Top, Edie Top, Alice Top, Lucia Top or the Ultimate T-Shirt for a more casual look.

So what is a PDF pattern?
A PDF pattern is a downloadable pattern that you print yourself at home on A4 or US letter paper. Alternatively you can choose to have the copyshop files printed on large A0 paper, and posted to you at home. If you’re using the A4 or US letter options, simply download, print at home, tape together and let the sewing begin! When you print the pattern, print at 100% (you might have to uncheck the scale box). Print page 1 first, the square should measure 10cm x 10cm.

Choosing a fabric
Ruby is a really versatile pattern that works in a lot of different fabrics. If you'd like to learn more about all the types of fabrics then there's no better place to start than our Intro to Fabrics series on Stitch School.
Supplies
You don't need many supplies to sew up the Ruby Skirt - just the basics!
You can find the scissors that Rosie's using here, or learn more about basic sewing supplies (and extra special supplies) on Stitch School.
Interfacing
Okay, let's start sewing! The first step of sewing the Ruby Skirt is to apply your interfacing.
If you'd like to find some more info about interfacing then why not try our How to use interfacing tutorial.
Preparing the pockets
Stay at the ironing board as the next step is preparing your patch pockets - there'll be lots of pressing a little bit of topstitching involved.
Attaching the pockets
Once you're happy with how your pockets are looking, it's time to attach them to the front skirt pieces.
Creating the button placket
Your button placket runs front and central down your Ruby Skirt, so make sure to take your time to ensure that you're happy with it. Follow Rosie's tips to get the best possible placket!
Sewing the gathering stitches
The front of the Ruby Skirt is gathered into the waistband. Sew your gathering stitches now, ahead of sewing up the side seams.
Sewing the side seams
In this step, we're sewing up and finishing the side seams. If you've got an overlocker then you can finish your seams on that, but a sewing machine will also work perfectly well if you don't!
Preparing the waistband
Preparing and sewing the waistband is one of the biggest sections of sewing the Ruby Skirt, so make sure you've got a little bit of time set aside for the next few videos. Take it slow and it should all come together beautifully!
Attaching the waistband
Once the short ends of your waistband have been sewn, and you've neatly pressed your centre and 1.5cm lines, then it's time to attach the waistband to the skirt.
Inserting the elastic
Having elastic in the back of a waistband makes for a very comfy garment. Here's how you insert elastic in the back of a waistband...
Fitting the Ruby Skirt
There's very little fitting involved when you're making the Ruby Skirt, all you need to do is make sure that it's comfortable around your waist. So try on your Ruby now to make sure and adjust your elastic if necessary.
Finishing the waistband
This is the last step of the trickiest section of the Ruby Skirt - once you've finished the waistband you're definitely on the home stretch!
Finishing the hem
Grab your chosen method of finishing raw edges, it's time to finish and hem the skirt hem!
Adding the buttons and buttonholes
You've arrived at the final step of sewing the Ruby Skirt! The last job is to sew some buttonholes and then hand sew your buttons in place.
Conclusion
Congratulations! Take your newly finished Ruby Skirt and show it off to the world!
