Introducing our latest woven skirt sewing pattern: the Niamh Skirt (the beautiful Irish name is pronounced neev). Aimed at confident beginners, Niamh is also a quick and satisfying make for the more advanced sewers amongst you.
The star of the show is the yoke, which sits nice and flat around the hips, and culminates in a V shape at the front for a very flattering cut. Floaty skirt pieces are gathered into the yoke, adding a pretty detail without creating any unwanted bulk. If you’re nervous about tackling the gathering, we have a great class on Stitch School showing you how to sew the yoke on the Niamh Skirt.
Finished with a simple waistband, the Niamh Skirt closes with a concealed zip on the side. This might be the most daunting step for beginners, but it’s not as scary as you might think, and it’s a great skill to master. Check out our Stitch School class for extra help.
To maximise the versatility of the Niamh Skirt, you can choose from three different lengths:
Mini – short and sweet, looks great with sandals or pumps in the summer and can easily transition into the colder months when worn with tights and ankle boots.
Midi – keep it casual by wearing it with trainers or dress it up with a pair of heels. This length would also look great with knee-high boots and tights for when the weather gets chillier.
Maxi – embrace the full bohemian look with a floor-length Niamh. With sandals and a flower crown, it’s the perfect festival outfit, and you can keep wearing it in the autumn with heeled boots and a cosy jumper.
Fabrics with lots of drape, like viscose and rayon, are perfect to create a floaty Niamh Skirt. You could also use a lightweight cotton (nothing too heavy as you will struggle with the gathers otherwise!) for a slightly more structured look. Our Pattern Insiders made their versions in an array of different textiles, including one in Ankara fabric with a matching crop top!
