Introducing our new peasant style blouse and dress sewing pattern: the Frida Blouse & Dress. Inspired by the garments worn by Mexican artist and eclectic style icon Frida Kahlo, we wanted to create something that you can just throw on and feel comfortable in.
The Frida Blouse & Dress is a simple yet stylish garment perfect for transitional weather. With no tricky closures, you can just pop it over your head and you're ready to go, making it easy for a confident beginner. The front and back yoke and bodice pleats make it a satisfying project for more experienced sewers as well. If you want to get the fit just right, and you usually find you need to do a full bust adjustment, we have a great class on Stitch School on how to do a full bust adjustment on Frida. and one where we show you how to make and insert piping into a seam, perfect to use on the Frida yoke!
To make our Frida sewing pattern as versatile as possible, we've given you a blouse and two dress options (mini or midi), as well as a choice of two sleeve lengths. Make a simple short sleeve or get ready to make a statement with a beautiful long sleeve finished with some elastic at the wrist for maximum volume.
Frida works in many types of fabrics. The blouse looks great in a cotton poplin or a cotton lawn to accentuate the pleats and give structure to those statement sleeves. Choose a fabric with more drape like viscose, rayon or Tencel for the dress version, it will move beautifully! We made one of our samples in a double gauze (the cream version on our model Janene) which works well with the pattern and makes it extra cosy and soft against the skin.
Have a look at the Fridas made by our Pattern Insiders. It's amazing how different the pattern looks in each fabric and we love how some of the PIs added little touches like piping along the yoke seam or pockets and a waist tie for the dress!
