Sew a stunning bra-friendly summer dress with the Sofia Dress PDF sewing pattern!

The Sofia Dress is a gorgeous strappy dress with a lower back cut-out and the choice of buttons or a bow for the back closure.

The bodice is lined and gathered at the centre front to create a gentle sweetheart shape over a wide waistband. Version one closes with a beautiful bow at the back (fully bra-friendly when tied the right way). Version two closes with buttons at the centre back and includes two different options to create a higher or lower back cut-out.

You can make Sofia with a simple gathered skirt or with three gathered tiers for more volume and for a chance to play with the print on your fabric – Sofia is a great one for stripes! The skirt is elasticated at the back and you can make the lower back more or less exposed by using a longer or shorter length of elastic.

Make your Sofia in cotton or chambray for a more structured look and a fuller bow, or create a flowy summer dress in viscose or crepe.

Sewing Level

The Sofia Dress is a Confident Beginner woven dress sewing pattern.

Fabric Suggestions

The Sofia Dress can work beautifully in a range of fabrics. For a more structured look choose light to medium weight woven fabric such as cotton poplin, cotton lawn, linen, seersucker or broderie anglaise. Due to the gathered nature of the skirt we recommend avoiding anything too bulky. If you would like something softer you can opt for a viscose or crepe. You’ll need a lightweight cotton lawn for the bodice lining or you can also line in your main fabric.

Huge thanks to our friends at Sew Me Sunshine who provided us with the beautiful cotton seersucker for the red and white striped sample!

What is a PDF pattern?

A PDF pattern is a downloadable pattern that you print yourself at home on A4 or US letter paper.

Choose to add on A0 printing and we will print the pattern on our A0 printers and post it to you so all you need to access digitally is the instruction booklet.

If you're using the A4 or US letter options, simply download, print at home, tape together and let the sewing begin! When you print the pattern, print at 100% (you might have to uncheck the scale box). Print page 1 first, the square should measure 10cm x 10cm. Is this sewing pattern layered?

Yes! This pattern is layered so you can print off just the size(s) that you need. Find out more about layering here.

Like all our patterns, the sizes are nested to make it easier to grade between the sizes, depending on your measurements.
