Sew a stylish and practical accessory with the Bucket Bag PDF sewing pattern!

Bucket bags are having a moment—and now you can sew your very own! With a classic drawstring fastening (hello, stopper detail!), a flat base, full lining, and a handy inside pocket, this bag is as practical as she is cute.

The adjustable straps let you wear it your way, crossbody for busy days, or over one shoulder for an effortlessly stylish look.

Do not underestimate this little bag, she is deceptively roomy. Thanks to the flat base and tall shape, you can easily fit all your essentials, including a paperback/kindle and a water bottle, which we personally can’t go anywhere without!

Make your Bucket Bag in anything from cotton canvas, to cotton twill, or denim. Our favourite combination is canvas interfaced with Decovil to get that perfect structured look without making your machine work overtime with too many thick layers. For the lining, a sturdy quilting cotton from your stash is ideal.

Keep it classic with a solid colour that goes with everything, or have some fun with a bold print—perfect for picnics, holidays, and turning heads wherever you go. And if you’re in the gifting mood, the Bucket Bag makes a seriously adorable handmade present!

Sewing Level

The Bucket Bag sewing pattern is aimed at Confident Beginners.

Fabric Suggestions

Medium to heavy weight woven fabrics such as cotton twill, cotton canvas or denim will work well for the outer. Use medium weight wovens such as quilting cotton, cotton poplin or viscose twill for the lining. We have had the best results using a canvas weight fabric with Decovil light interfacing to provide structure.

What is a PDF pattern?

A PDF pattern is a downloadable pattern that you print yourself at home on A4 or US letter paper.

Choose to add on A0 printing and we will print the pattern on our A0 printers and post it to you so all you need to access digitally is the instruction booklet.

If you're using the A4 or US letter options, simply download, print at home, tape together and let the sewing begin! When you print the pattern, print at 100% (you might have to uncheck the scale box). Print page 1 first, the square should measure 10cm x 10cm.
