Meet the Sally Shirt: a timeless sleeveless shirt that deserves a permanent spot in your handmade wardrobe.

Sally is a shirt that feels effortlessly polished yet is surprisingly quick to sew, making it a dream project for confident beginners ready to step up, or intermediate sewists looking for a satisfying make. With its neat fit through the shoulders and bust, gentle ease through the waist and hips, and thoughtful tailoring details, Sally strikes that perfect balance between structure and comfort.

The Sally Shirt features a beautifully finished collar and stand, a smart yoke with a soft back box pleat for ease of movement, and bust darts for a flattering shape. The armholes are neatly bound for a clean, professional finish, and you can add an optional patch pocket if you love a practical touch.

Sally is incredibly versatile depending on your fabric choice. Sew her in a crisp cotton or cotton lawn for a fresh, everyday workwear staple, or opt for viscose, viscose linen, or crepe for a softer, more fluid silhouette. If you’re after something a little more glamorous, a silky fabric transforms the Sally Shirt into an elevated piece perfect for evenings out.

Style her tucked into the Rosemary Trousers for effortless office chic, or wear her loose and relaxed, tied at the waist for a more casual, laid-back feel. For a sleek, sophisticated look, pair her with the Nina Trousers and a luxe fabric choice.

The Sally Shirt is one of those satisfying makes you’ll want to sew again and again. Simple, stylish, and endlessly wearable.

The Sally Shirt pattern is aimed at Intermediate sewists.

Fabric Suggestions

Huge thanks to our friends at Minerva who provided us with the viscose linen for Rosie's Sally Shirt, and to the lovely gang at Sew Me Sunshine who supplied the cotton for Lucy's Sally Shirt.

For the Sally Shirt we recommend medium weight woven fabrics such as cotton lawn, poplin, viscose linen or shirting fabrics. For more drape you could also use a light weight fabric such as silk or viscose.

You will also need 7x 12-15mm buttons, and 55cm of interfacing. The pattern includes instructions for making your own bias binding but alternatively you could also use pre-made binding - you will need 1m of 12mm single fold binding.

Pattern Sizes & Fabric Requirements

The Sally Shirt is available in UK sizes 6-30 and is split into two different blocks: sizes 6-20 (B cup) and sizes 18-30 (D cup). See the size charts below for details on fabric requirements.

The downloadable pattern file contains:

  • Printable PDF Pattern in sizes A4, US Letter & A0
  • Fully-illustrated printable instruction booklet

If you purchase the PDF Pattern + A0 Printing option, you will also receive your pattern printed on A0 paper in the post. Find out more about our A0 Printing Service here.

The Harriet Skirt pattern is either 18 A4/US letter pages, or 1 A0 page (sizes 6-20), or 23 A4/US letter pages, or 1 A0 page (size 18-30).

What is a PDF pattern?

A PDF pattern is a downloadable pattern that you print yourself at home on A4 or US letter paper.

Choose to add on A0 printing and we will print the pattern on our A0 printers and post it to you so all you need to access digitally is the instruction booklet.

If you're using the A4 or US letter options, simply download, print at home, tape together and let the sewing begin! When you print the pattern, print at 100% (you might have to uncheck the scale box). Print page 1 first, the square should measure 10cm x 10cm. Never used a PDF pattern before and would like some help? Learn everything you need to know in our free tutorial How to Assemble a PDF Pattern

Is this sewing pattern layered?

Yes! This pattern is layered so you can print off just the size(s) that you need. Find out more about layering here.

Like all our patterns, the sizes are nested to make it easier to grade between the sizes, depending on your measurements.
