The Maria Dress is vintage romance at its finest; feminine shaping, elegant details and the perfect showcase for your most gorgeous fabrics.

The standout feature is the beautifully pleated bodice with soft folds radiating across the bust, which combined with the gentle v-neckline and fitted waist create a striking vintage-inspired silhouette. Use stripes to highlight the innovative grainline placement, or choose a favourite print and let the pleating take centre stage.

A faux wrap (that never gapes!), side zip opening, bra-friendly straps and fully lined bodice make Maria as comfortable to wear as she is pretty. The gathered skirt balances out the fitted bodice to give you a gorgeous (not to mention very swish-able) silhouette, and of course there’s plenty of room for pockets.

Maria works in most light to medium weight wovens; choose a cotton lawn or poplin to make the most of the fit and flare shape or a viscose or crepe for a softer, ultra-swishy skirt and softer bust pleats. For a lining opt for something light, such as a cotton lawn or voile, to add structure if you’re using a viscose or crepe but to not add too much bulk if you’re sewing in a cotton.

Maria is a standout dress in its own right, but pairs perfectly with your Sorrento Jacket for summer evenings or an open Amy Shirt for a relaxed daytime look. Add tights and boots when the weather cools and you'll be reaching for Maria all year round.

Sewing Level

The Maria Dress pattern is aimed at Intermediate sewists, but can definitely be tackled by a Confident Beginner if you're happy to take your time and are familiar with invisible zip construction.

Fabric Suggestions

For the Maria Dress we recommend light to medium weight woven fabrics. Use cotton lawn or poplin to get a dress with more structure and a defined sillhouette, or opt for viscose or crepe for softer bust pleats and less volume in the skirt. Line the bodice with cotton lawn or voile to add stability to lighter fabrics but not too much bulk to anything heavier.

Huge thanks to our friends at Fabric Godmother for sending us the viscose crepe for Rosie's Maria Dress, and the cotton lawn for Emily's Maria Dress.

What is a PDF pattern?

A PDF pattern is a downloadable pattern that you print yourself at home on A4 or US letter paper.

Choose to add on A0 printing and we will print the pattern on our A0 printers and post it to you so all you need to access digitally is the instruction booklet.

If you're using the A4 or US letter options, simply download, print at home, tape together and let the sewing begin! When you print the pattern, print at 100% (you might have to uncheck the scale box). Print page 1 first, the square should measure 10cm x 10cm.
